Where are they now? Catch up with Jason Crump of O'Toole Plumbing

'yes' Coach has worked many miracles — but did the program manage to turn a pair of tradies into savvy businessmen?

Those who have followed the rise and rise of Anthony O'Toole and Jason Crump of O'Toole Plumbing on BizThinkTank will know they've put in the hard yakka to make their business better.

So, are these plumbers all they're cracked up to be?

To find out, I caught up with Jason to find out how he's faring since coaching.

So, what's the story? There may only be 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week, but Jason says the 'yes' Coach program made time for him and Anthony to work on their business rather than in it.

Jason says that the structure they learnt in the coaching sessions taught them to be more organised.

"So the time we're spending at work is quality time," says Jason. "We're a bit more organised, we know what we're doing — well, at least we think we do!"

This know-how means they can make the most of their time, all the time. And, as they say in business — time is money!

"When it comes to the time we spend in our office, we're not going in there and mucking around. The time spent there is quality time."

Focus is a new skill they've refined — they know where they're going and they know what they need to do to get there. Systems are now a firm feature in the business, and Jason says the office is decked out with whiteboards with plenty of 'to do' lists.

This is so un-tradie!

Jason says having their systems sorted means that "when you go to actually do a project you've got procedures to follow that help you get things done more efficiently and a bit quicker".

You could say, I guess, there's no more blockages in this business!

Of the coaching sessions, Jason said they "flew by really quickly, which was a bit of a shame".

You know that they say — time flies when you're having fun!

"I tried to take out of it as much as we could," says Jason. "And we've still got all the notes and stuff from the coaching — we're looking forward to going over them again."

But it wasn't an easy period. During the coaching sessions, they were the busiest they've ever been.

"Looking back at it, Anthony and I realise we should have put more time into it. But we took a lot away from it, which was good."

The two were always sure to set aside a couple of hours each week to review and implement what they'd learnt from Head Business Coach .

"I know it doesn't seem like much time but it was for us," says Jason.

And what about O'Toole plumbing these days?

Jason says their lessons from Lesley Ann are still fresh in their minds — the trick now is to ensure it stays there!

To make sure it does, the pair are planning to set aside one day each month to review their notes from the 'yes' Coach sessions and work on improving their business.

The business, thanks to all the support behind the scenes, and the two boys' willingness to change for the better, continues to grow.

"We're still working on it and finding ways to operate our business more efficiently. Everything seems to be going along very well so far," says Jason.

For Jason, the 'yes' Coach experience has brought many changes — he's no longer just a tradesman, but a businessman to boot!

This transition has strengthened the O'Toole-Crump partnership, taking the pressure off Anthony.

"I've found it really good so far," says Jason.

"I still do a bit of hands-on work, but I'm enjoying the office work and finding out all the little bits and pieces that go on behind the scenes of the actual physical work. I'm enjoying it, but I've still got plenty to learn!"

Most people in business get frustrated — it's a sign that something has to change, but we're not great at changing ourselves. Anthony and Jason learnt that if nothing changes, nothing changes.

They changed and professionalism followed — that's a massive change for any business.
