INTRODUCTION
After many years working in the Human Resource sector, Pam McLennan has realised a dream of having a home based business operating 24 hours a day seven days a week, with one online store selling organic baby clothes and another offering Australian Macadamia Chocolates.
THE CHALLENGE
“Learning the unknown is the biggest challenge a small business faces. Where to begin… well, who to trust with your money and how much should one spend on a new venture such as this. When you also throw in the fact you have little or no knowledge but want to pursue your dreams, it gets more complicated. Should I take the risk? Key for me was gaining as much information as I could from respected clients and those in a similar business, and by reading.”
THE SOLUTION
“I gained confidence in taking on the risks by sourcing recommendations from other people who have started up their own business. Believing in myself was key, knowing I will do whatever it takes to make a success of the new business venture. I also subscribed to small business bulletins, joined groups, networked and sought Government assistance on how to start a small business. Determination, trial and error and having confidence in the people you work with all played a part too.”
THE BUSINESS BENEFITS
“We’ve taken many avenues – using Twitter, Facebook, Google, Blogs, Linkedin, MySpace, Email marketing and Google. Word of mouth and networking is vital, and we aim to provide unparalleled service, making sure every customer is valued. Having the right equipment is critical for running the business including a great mobile phone service and a provider you can depend on.
FURTHER INFORMATION
“Having Optus has been fantastic, and gives us confidence particularly when travelling. We have our emails downloaded onto our mobile and use international roaming, and Optus go out of their way to advise us what we need to do to make all this work easy and effectively. The great thing is Optus is available to take all your concerns and advise the best package for your business.”
