Business name: SpaceOut
Industry: Online
Number of Employees: 1-5
Website: http://www.spaceout.com.au

INTRODUCTION

SpaceOut is a new, innovative and unique online service allowing home and business owners to make money by renting out their unused space – for storage, parking, or office use. SpaceOut connects people looking for space with those that have space available to rent – and provides an opportunity to literally make money out of thin air.

THE CHALLENGE

When we first came up with this concept, we undertook extensive searches, and this type of service was not available anywhere else in the world. We realised that the real potential for this service was international (particularly in the USA), so we needed to make sure that we kept a low international profile on the concept. When we launched the site in Australia – our marketing needed to be focused on the local Australian market, while remaining under the radar overseas (at the moment).

THE SOLUTION

Initial marketing involved localised flyer drops, email marketing and press releases to local media. As the business is an online service and Search traffic is important, the site has been heavily optimised, but we had to be careful that initial online distribution has still been largely Australia focused (at the moment)

THE BUSINESS BENEFITS

The concept has been unanimously received as “fabulous” and just about everyone thinks it is a great idea. From the initial launch in January 2009, we have seen steady growth in visitors, members and listings, and currently have hundreds of members and listings – Australia wide.
