Top 5 tips on how to get more clients online and grow your profits

If you’re setting up a business or you are wondering how to ramp things up in 2018, the internet is one of the most valuable tools you can use to win more clients. Think of the internet as your virtual megaphone to get more clients, announcing to the world that you have something amazing to offer. Unfortunately, in almost every industry there are a lot of other people with megaphones! Many of them are selling the same goods or services as you are, and in order to gain more clients you must cut through the noise and reach your target audience. I am going to share with you my top five tips to win clients online and turn your business into a success story.

  1. Set your goals and form your strategy

Before anything else, ask yourself what it is you want to achieve. It may be more hits to your website or it could be more sales conversions. Once you know what you want to achieve, set yourself a specific goal (or two or three) in accordance with this and you’ll have something tangible to work towards. Once you have a goal, you need to form a strategy. How are you going to achieve your goals? What actions will you take and how will you make sure they have worked?

Here’s a quick example of some goals and strategies:

Goal Strategy #1 Strategy #2 Strategy #3
Increase website unique users by 30% Update website copy based on SEO keyword researchers rch Publish a weekly blog containing relevant SEO keywords Create targeted Google AdWords campaign
Create an engaged Facebook audience Paid Facebook promotion to increase followers Daily schedule of Facebook posts sending traffic back to the website Create exclusive offers for Facebook followers
Improve online sales by 25% Analyse current user behaviour and identify weak spots Redesign website to optimise buyer experience Create retargeting campaign aimed at visitors who browse but do not buy

Failure often happens when you flounder on creating a comprehensive strategy. Don’t try things for a couple of weeks, then give up and move on to something different. You must allow room for trial and error, it is a good strategy to use an ever-evolving A/B testing method. This means trying two things simultaneously for a week or two, then continuing with the strategy that is working best.

  1. Review your website

In order to get more clients online your website must be more than an online brochure. Great websites are an exercise in psychology. An effective website is one that excites buyers by explaining how their problems will be solved when they purchase your product or service. Each page builds the credibility of your brand, product or service and directs mouse cursors to that ever-important “Buy Now”, “Book an Appointment” or “Contact Us” button.

An effective website has the following:

  • Inspiring copy demonstrating how your business solves your customer’s problems
  • Beautiful and compelling imagery
  • Content and page titles optimised with strategic SEO keywords
  • Testimonials / social proof from happy customers
  • Free offers to capture leads e.g. newsletters / e-books / first time buyer discounts
  • A call to action on EVERY PAGE

Video is becoming more and more popular, so if possible, add a good quality video which shares information about your business. This will help to form a connection between your brand and your buyer.

  1. Be a thought leader

Smart business people get clients online by establishing themselves as an expert in their field. You can do this through creating a blog. If you’re not convinced in the value of having a blog, consider that major brands around the world including Coca-Cola, AirBnB and fashion brand Anthropologie all have active blogs.

Firstly, your blogs should be strategically written with SEO keywords and client needs in mind. Before you begin writing, consider what are the top five questions that your customers would have for you and turn these into blog posts. To keep your blog easy to read and visually appealing, aim for at least 600 words and break your post up with headings and appealing images.

The second part of your blogging strategy is perhaps the most important. It is important to consider distribution. You can begin by posting your blogs to your website, sharing them on social media and adding them to your regular newsletter. But don’t stop there! The impact of having your blog post picked up by relevant online publications is quite substantial in positioning you as an expert in your field. Editors are always looking for content and may be interested in publishing your work as a guest post. Your guest post will be much more effective than an ad, it will cost a lot less and also give you more credibility.

If you are too busy to write for yourself or writing is just not your thing, you can commission a professional blogger to create your content for you. Work with them on a content strategy and get them to deliver your blogs quarterly so that you’re not fussing around with them on a weekly basis.

  1. Harness the power of social

Social media is where you can really have some fun! Your social media content should be all about magnetic images, compelling videos, interesting articles and exciting customer specials. Don’t make the mistake of trying to ‘win’ on every social media platform. Take into consideration your type of business and what will work best for you. For example, a B2B organisation may find they get better reach on LinkedIn. A highly visual business like a florist or fashion brand might achieve the best results from Pinterest or Instagram. Building your client base through social is not about the hard sell. It is more about building brand awareness and creating a community. The most important thing about your social media is to be consistent. Plan ahead so you have content ready to post regularly and investigate some social media marketing tools that could make what you want to achieve a lot more streamlined.

  1. Get Listed

In order to win more customers and increase your profits your business must be easy to find online. Sites such as, Google My Business, Yelp, Bing, TripAdvisor and True Local all give you the opportunity to promote your business with a free listing. This is another tactic to boost your discoverability on SEO platforms. It is simple to set up your account with these platforms and to add information about opening hours, location and contact details. Once your business is listed, it is a good idea to send some of your clients a link and ask them to post a five-star review about you and your business. This builds your online credibility and improves your reputation.

To win clients online, you need time and a multifaceted strategy. Start with these tips and you will be on the right track to build your audience and grow your sales.
